Leisure and Pleasure Source Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Leisure and Pleasure Source Analysis - Essay Example The main difference may be in the level of advancement of the medium; newspaper. In this discourse, an analysis of a sample newspaper excerpt published in 1971 is performed to illustrate some of the differences and similarities. Newspaper adverts in London in 1741 must have been a very important medium for channelling particularly commercial information to the customers. There was a strict control that the authorities in London used to prevent spread of dangerous information. One of the control measures, as seen on the left top corner, is the demand that legal endorsement of a circulating newspaper in form of an official stamp must have authenticated its publication and circulation (Hundt 2000, p332). According to the author, illegal newspapers production had to cleverly look for alternative distribution channels. A major way that assisted their penetration of the market was through backstreet sales through the help of hawkers. One characteristic of these illegal newspapers was an attractive and catchy design and presentation that included graphics and illustrations. Advancements to these market penetration wars attracted use of more catchy images and pictures on advertisements in order to keep in touch wit h the competition. It follows that there was an important group of people whose leisure activities must have been met thereby opening an opportunity for newspaper publishing to thrive. The first advert on Hay Market is particularly short and to the point, which illustrates the observation of strict regulation. In the advert, the title and emphasis words are on different font that creates the stress impact which catches the eye of the reader. The second advert on Drury-lane and Le Genereux Corsaire likewise avoid the use of bulk wording but captures the intended emphasis through case variation on various words. Short forms such as call’d, arriv’d, ‘tis and bop’d are applied in the adverts to

Asian-American Experience Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Asian-American Experience - Essay Example The two stories I had selected are Adrian Tomine's â€Å"Shortcomings† and the â€Å"Flower Drum Song† by Rodgers and Hammerstein. In the case of â€Å"Shortcomings†, the main part is played by Ben Tanaka (a Japanese-American) who is living in Berkeley, California and works at a movie theater. He considers himself more American than Japanese in his ways and he is always confounded and confused by his Japanese girlfriend named Miko Hayashi. He claims he could hardly understand Miko anymore by this statement: â€Å"Her name's Miko and, uh, she's Japanese, so you know ....† to hide his own feelings of sexual insecurity and misanthropy. Ben can be considered to be no better than an adolescent wrestling with his own internal demons about conflicts regarding his real identity (although he is now 30 years old). He soon fell into disgrace and disrepute when Miko leaves him temporarily ostensibly to take up an internship in New York and showed his preference for bl onds by becoming entangled with two women. This preference is not actually sexually related but a manifestation of his cultural brainwashing or an unexpressed desire to assimilate and belong to the larger community instead of his own racial minority. Ben, perhaps due to some cultural innocence, was very much surprised upon learning that Miko had gone to New York, not for the internship but to hook up with someone else - a photographer. This naivetà © is indicative of the sometimes confusing world faced by all Americans of mixed ancestries. Ben Tanaka had staked his cultural.

Persuasive Research PaperFinal Version Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Persuasive Research PaperFinal Version - Essay Example Some brides experience the intercourse slightly discomforting and unsatisfying. Rather than accepting that this is a usual, normal experience that will eventually be go away through repetition, she could sustain a negative form of fear or anxiety which will ruin the marriage. This usually results in depression. This essay argues that postnuptial depression or post-wedding blues among newlywed women is very real and common. Postnuptial depression is a widespread, but rarely studied issue. Signs involve buying Martha Steward Weddings in secret, attending bridal shows simply to know the current trend in the market, and trying to make an appointment with the wedding planner because she misses her. Postnuptial depression may not be classified as a clinical finding, yet it has moved into the marriage dictionary in recent years, and newlywed women will attest to its reality. The depression normally happen soon after the wedding, according to psychiatrists, as newlywed women start realizing that dreams of how their relationship or spouse will change after the wedding are too idealistic. Worse, as soon as the excitement of the wedding dries out, couples are forced to abandon their deeply treasured and often enduring ‘bride and groom’ limelight and simply deal with reality. A San Francisco psychologist, Dr. Michelle Gannon, reports there has been an increase recently in the number of newlyweds who seek help for their postnuptial depression. According to psychiatrists, most people feel a certain extent of disillusionment after the wedding, but 5 to 10 per cent of newlywed couples experience severe enough regret, disappointment, or unhappiness to compel them to look for professional counselling. The medical head of the Moonview Sanctuary in California, Dr. Terry Eagan, refers to post-wedding blues the undisclosed sorrow—women who suffer from it are usually quite ashamed to disclose it to anyone. One newlywed woman admitted that â€Å"A lot of my friends had

Business Strategy in a Global Environment Essay - 1

Business Strategy in a Global Environment - Essay Example The new business scenario opens new vista for growth for all corporates. There are deeper challenges before them. The task before entrepreneurs is to make use of the wider growth potential and face challenges more comprehensively. In this scenario, companies have to devise a new approach for growth and give shape global strategy to face the competition and face challenges ahead. Knowledge management, risk management, strategic management, and resource management are some of the new terms in this global business scenario. Companies need to taken into consideration market information in other parts of the country and purchasing and behaving patterns of people in potential markets before devising strategies and roadmaps for growth. International trade is termed as exchange of products and services across boundaries of countries and continents. From the beginning of human history there had been some kind of trade between individuals and communities. Exchange of service and trade had been a voluntary action among individuals and communities in the beginning. They first communities shared their excess resources and additional services to co habitants without expecting any monitory benefits. At that resources were abundant and majority of people were involved in agriculture. But as the civilizations emerged and people have settled in particular area, some kind of economics introduced to the exchange of good and services. People have traveled around the world searching better prospects. Europeans and Chinese travelers had sailed and find out new routes and destinations. They sourced products from Asia, Northern America and Europe and sell in other markets. This can be considered as the first step of cross continent and national trade. Later trade has emerged as a major area for most of the countries around the world. Most of the wars fought were on the trade interest. Emperors sailed and traveled world over searching of larger trade prospective. It was in the colonial period that globalization in its actual concept was evolved. The Europeans had conquered countries in Asia, Africa and North America with larger trade interest. They find it easy to source products and human power to improve trade prospects. The companies in Europe had entered into these markets and expanded their products and services. Later the colonialists could not carry the huge burden of this undeveloped area and population as the freedom struggle got intensified. So they left these colonies and most of them got independence. Western companies had also left these newly independent countries. The trade policies of these newly formed countries were more inward looking and there were some kind of xenophobia. But in the second half of the 20th century, many of these countries realized the necessity of technology, new products and services. The cold war had seen some kind of polarization even in the trade scenario. The so called socialist countries had grouped with former United States of Socialist Republic or Soviet Union. Europeans countries and United States had formed another alliance of developed countries. The international trade during that time was also highly polarized. It was British, European and Americans, who had started the trend of entering overseas markets seeking better

Slave owners Thesis Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Slave owners - Thesis Example This research will begin with the statement that the institution of slavery was a dark era in the history of the American nation. Although now criticized as morally intolerable, several in colonial America believed that the economic growth of the United States was dependent upon forced laborers. Although it was a very popular form of labor during the early stages of American growth, it was very cruel and evil type of labor and Americans understood this; to be a slave owner you had to of had a mindset that was just purely focused on wealth and status and no respect for the black race at all. The owner and slave relationship was characterized by the domination of the owner over the slave. Force was the basis of this relationship and this idea was clearly articulated in the 1829 decision by a judge in North Carolina concerning the relationship between an owner and a slave. He wrote: With slavery ... the end is the profit of the master, his security and the public safety; the subject, one doomed in his own person, and his posterity, to live without knowledge, and without the capacity to make anything his own, and to toil that another may reap his fruits†¦. The power of the master must be absolute, to render the submission of the slave perfect. Another common aspect of American slavery was isolation. Africans were stolen away from their homes, families, and culture. Everything that was familiar to them was stripped away and they were then isolated in a new world.... laims of birth, they were also denied the right of creating family ties that would be recognized by the law.5 Selling children away from their parents was a common practice. The law did not recognize African slave relationships, and families could be ripped apart if masters desired. Selling husbands away from wives or children away from mothers was a common practice in America and was sometimes used as a threat of punishment.6 Some masters tried to keep families together; however this was rare. "Kenneth Stamp forcefully insists that the great majority of slaveholders chose business over sentiment and broke up families when under financial pressure."7 For most masters, monetary success tended to be more important than the happiness of slaves. African slaves in America were deemed social outcasts. They were thought to be strange and assumed to be savage. These were the major components in that sense of difference that provided the mental margin between masters and African slaves. They were never considered equals to whites and were placed at the bottom of the social hierarchy. As Winthrop Jordan wrote: They did not belong to the same community as Christians, or civilized Europeans. The focus of this "we-they" distinction was at first religious, later racial. †¦to be Christian was to be civilized rather than barbarous, English rather than African, white rather than black.8 African slaves were considered strangers by the white population and also among each other. They were taken from various areas throughout Africa and the chances of being enslaved with others from the same area or clan were slim.9 Owners could use slaves for whatever they pleased; slaves had no rights. They could not make basic decisions on their own such as what or when to eat. Slaves could not choose
